Catnip, a fragrant, leafy herb from the mint family, is widely recognized for its joyful effect on felines, offering playful stimulation. Beyond its popularity with pets, this easily grown herb has a rich history of human use as a calming herbal remedy. Its mild, minty flavor makes it a soothing addition to teas, revered for its ability to promote relaxation, aid digestion, and support restful sleep. • HOW TO USE

Craft Your Own Catnip Tincture: A Calming Elixir

A catnip tincture is a concentrated herbal extract, capturing the calming and digestive benefits of the catnip plant. Made by steeping fresh or dried catnip in a liquid base, it's an excellent way to preserve and utilize this versatile herb.

Simple Steps to Create Your Tincture

Making a catnip tincture at home is straightforward. Here's what you'll need and how to do it:

    Ingredients:

    • Catnip: Fresh or dried leaves, enough to fill 2/3 of your jar loosely.
    • Extracting Liquid (Menstruum): Choose one:
    • Brandy (80-proof): For a potent tincture with a smoother flavor.
    • Vodka (100-proof): Very effective, but can result in a stronger taste.
    • Raw Apple Cider Vinegar: A non-alcoholic option, yielding a milder tincture.
    • Vegetable Glycerin: Another non-alcoholic choice, great for those avoiding alcohol.

    Instructions:

    1. Prepare the Catnip: If using fresh catnip, rinse gently and allow it to dry completely. Chop the leaves finely to increase the surface area for extraction.
    2. Fill Your Jar: Loosely pack your prepared catnip into a clean jar, leaving about 1/2 inch of space at the top.
    3. Add Liquid: Pour your chosen alcohol or glycerin over the catnip, ensuring all plant material is fully submerged.
    4. Macerate: Seal the jar tightly. Store it in a cool, dark place for 4-6 weeks, shaking or stirring daily to help the extraction process.
    5. Strain & Bottle: After maceration, strain the liquid through a fine-mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth. Squeeze out all the liquid from the plant material.
    6. Label & Store: Transfer the finished tincture into clean, dark glass bottles, ideally with droppers. Don't forget to label them with the contents and date for future reference. Store in a cool, dark place.

    Important Notes for Your Tincture

    • Fresh vs. Dried: While fresh catnip is often preferred for tinctures due to its potency, dried catnip works well too.
    • Liquid Choice: Your choice of menstruum will influence both the potency and the final flavor profile of your tincture.
    • Dosage: Tinctures are highly concentrated. Always start with a small dose and consult with an herbalist or healthcare professional for personalized guidance, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.
    • Shelf Life: Properly stored in a cool, dark place, your catnip tincture can last for a year or even longer.
